Opinions differ on the question of turf or self-seeding. There is a lot to be said for rolling turf. Unfortunately, the price of rolled turf is many times higher than that of self-seeding. Both lawns require good preparation and comprehensive care.
Rolled turf or self-seeding – which is better for my garden?
The decision between turf or self-seeding depends on factors such as cost, time and care. Rolled turf is more expensive but quicker to use and initially weed-free, while self-seeding is cheaper but slower to grow. Both require extensive preparation and care.
The advantages of rolled turf
The biggest advantage of installing turf is that it can be used quickly. Just three to four weeks after unrolling, children can romp around on it or host large garden parties.
You can only carefully walk on a self-seeded lawn after six to eight weeks. It will take three months until you can use it without restrictions.
In the first two years, hardly any weeds settle because of the dense turf of a rolled lawn. Afterwards, the first gaps appear here in which dandelions, daisies and other wild herbs grow and have to be removed.
Big price difference
While you can buy high-quality lawn seeds relatively cheaply in garden stores, you have to pay a lot more money for turf.
In addition to the pure purchase costs, which can be four times higher per square meter, there are also transport costs for turf. The finished lawn weighs quite a bit. Larger quantities can no longer be transported in private cars.
Rolled turf won't grow without soil preparation
Soil preparation is the same for both types of lawns. You need the floor

Only then can you either sow lawn or put turf on the ground.
When sowing the lawn, there is a risk that the birds will pick up some of the seeds. Rolling turf is not suitable for shady areas because it is too dense and moss grows quickly.
Rolled turf and self-sown lawns need care
Lawn care remains the same whether you have sown the lawn or simply rolled it out. If the grass is not mowed and blown regularly, neither turf nor self-seeded lawns will thrive.
