Even in this country, tropical plants can feel in good hands and happily bloom. Canna is one of the specimens for which the climate in Germany is sufficient to be able to develop flowers.
When does the canna bloom and how can the flowering period be extended?
The canna flowering period begins in June and can be extended until autumn by removing the withered flowers. To achieve an earlier start to flowering, the tubers can be grown at home from January and planted outdoors from mid-May.
Extend and accelerate the flowering period
Canna goes into its flowering period from June. Then hermaphrodite flowers appear at the ends of the cane. If you remove the withered flowers, you can extend the flowering period until autumn.
If you want to admire the flowers in spring, you should plant the flower tube at home. This can happen from January. The sprouted tubers are planted out from mid-May.
Appearance of the flowers
The flowers of Canna are multi-faceted. They are characterized by the following features:
- monochrome to two-color
- from yellow to red (less often white)
- 1 to 5 stamens
- three petals
- three sepals
- a twisted crown tube
Tips & Tricks
The flowers from the flower tube are less suitable for vase cutting. They don't last long and quickly look stunted.
