How should you fertilize Canna properly?
Canna needs regular fertilizer, especially before flowering. Use flower fertilizer weekly in the bucket and compost or horse manure monthly in the garden. Look for nutrients like nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, sulfur, boron and zinc. Fertilize moderately with potash in September for better wintering.
Period and frequency of fertilization
Canna can be fertilized when planting - usually in May - or it is worth adding compost, for example, to the potting soil. The last fertilizer application should be moderate in September.
Fertilizer should be applied regularly until flowering to stimulate growth and create a good basis for the flowers. Cannas in pots are fertilized every week. For cannas in the outdoor garden, a monthly fertilizer supply is sufficient.
Suitable fertilizers – in the garden and in the container
You don't have to spend a lot of money for he althy canna plants. If your flower tube is in a pot, standard flower fertilizer is sufficient (€18.00 on Amazon). However, if you have planted your canna outdoors in the garden, we recommend using compost or horse manure for fertilization. A dose of horn shavings won't do any harm either.
