The evergreen species Vinca major and Vinca major differ not only in factors such as the height of growth and the size of the leaves, but also in terms of their respective frost resistance. However, the recommendations regarding planting distance are similar for young plants of approximately the same strength.
What planting distance should you keep for evergreens?
The ideal planting distance for evergreens (Vinca major and Vinca minor) is around 25 to 30 cm in order to achieve a closed carpet of plants. Depending on your wishes and plant size, 5 to 12 plants can be used per square meter to form a dense ground cover.
Use Vinca major as a ground cover
The large evergreen can also be used as a ground cover in locations with a mild climate. Please note, however, that this type of plant grows significantly higher and can also tend to climb. Depending on the budget, plant size and time horizon for creating a closed plant cover, between 5 and 12 plants can be planted per m2.
The correct planting distance for a plant carpet made of Vinca minor
The following factors also determine the exact number of pieces per m2 for the small periwinkle Vinca minor:
- Availability of young plants
- how quickly a closed coverage of the ground is desired
- Consistency of the plant material
Basically, a green carpet of periwinkle can be completely closed more quickly if more plants are planted per m2. There is room for personal decisions between 5 to 8 and 8 to 12 young plants per m2. In general, the plants should be planted in the ground at a relatively even planting distance of around 25 to 30 cm.
Tip
If you keep the spaces free of weeds, you can initially plant the evergreen less densely and later cultivate offshoots yourself or wait for the plants to spread naturally.
