If the location and care are right, autumn anemones will grow in the same place for many years. Anemone hupehensis, as its Latin name is, is a perennial. This is how you properly care for the pretty autumn flower.
How do you properly care for autumn anemones?
Autumn anemones need moist but not too wet soil, slightly nutrient-rich soil and regular removal of dead flowers. In spring, old shoots should be cut back and perennials should be divided if necessary. Watch out for caterpillar infestation and anemone rust.
How often do autumn anemones need to be watered?
Keep the Anemone hupehensis moist but not too wet. Waterlogging must be avoided at all costs. If it rains a lot, a rain cover can be useful.
Do autumn anemones need special fertilizer?
Autumn anemones can cope with slightly nutrient-rich soil. Before planting, add some mature compost to the planting holes. In spring you can also rake some compost into the soil.
Can autumn anemones be transplanted?
Autumn anemones form very long taproots that are easily damaged when transplanting. Therefore, only replant the perennials in an emergency, for example because the location is not favorable or the plant has simply become too big.
Most varieties form runners. These should be cut off and used for propagation.
How do you shrink perennials that are too large?
If the plants have grown very large, it is advisable to dig up the autumn anemones and divide the perennials.
How to cut autumn anemones?
- Cutting faded flowers
- Pruning only in spring
- Remove diseased leaves immediately
Cut out the faded flowers as you go. Pruning in autumn is not recommended. Wait until spring to prune. Then shorten all old shoots almost to the ground.
What diseases and pests should you watch out for?
In a favorable location, caterpillars are the biggest problem. But you can easily collect these.
If anemone rust appears on the leaves, the plant is too moist. Cut off all affected shoots and consider a change of location.
Are autumn anemones hardy?
Older specimens of Anemone hupehensis are absolutely hardy. You should only cover them slightly in winter in very windy locations.
Autumn anemones planted in spring are not yet completely hardy. Cover the perennials with leaves, straw or tree cuttings.
