In addition to fruit and vegetables, the domestic cultivation of grain is becoming increasingly popular in Germany. Unlike the fruit, you cannot simply eat the grain raw. We advise you to clean the grain thoroughly before further processing. Of course, we will also provide you with the appropriate instructions. Find out more on this page.
Why and how should you clean grains?
You should clean grains to remove stones, grains of sand and other impurities that can affect the taste. You can use a kitchen sieve or a fan for this; professional cleaning machines are useful for larger quantities.
Cleaning grains - why?
When you let the grains trickle through your hands after harvesting them yourself, you probably think the work is already done. However, there are still numerous stones and grains of sand hidden in the husks that you cannot see at first glance. If you don't remove these by thoroughly cleaning your grain after harvesting, you will taste them later in the baked goods. Incidentally, these residues are not a sign of improper harvesting practices. Even experienced large-scale operations have to separate the wheat from the chaff after the harvest.
Cleaning grain methods
Rough cleaning
Cleaning grain sometimes turns out to be more difficult than initially expected. Some grains remain in the husks or the chaff simply does not slide down the machine's designated cleaning ramp. Successful cleaning therefore requires a little patience. Often multiple passes are required. Large farms have huge magnets that they use to pull fallen machine parts out of the straw. Since you hardly work with large tractors in your own garden, you can use smaller tools:
- Use a conventional kitchen sieve to remove the soil from the grain.
- A fan carries away the coarse waste.
Professional cleaning
If you regularly get high harvest yields, it is worth purchasing a grain cleaning machine. The following models are available for you to choose from. A combination often makes sense:
- Screen cleaner
- Precleaner
- Precleaner unloading station
- Drum screen cleaner
