When and how should daffodils be planted?

Daffodils should be planted in early fall, ideally in September. Choose a bright, sunny to partially shaded location with well-drained, loamy and humus-rich soil. Place the bulbs in the soil at a depth equal to three times their diameter, with the tips pointing upwards.

When is the best time?

If you plant daffodils at the wrong time, you risk the bulb drying out, no flowering, etc. But when is the best time to plant daffodils? Early fall turned out to be optimal. In September the bulbs are put into the ground.

If the bulbs are planted in spring, no more flowers can be expected in the same year. The onion needs an acclimatization period of at least 3 weeks. Therefore, planting in autumn is recommended

Which location is suitable?

Whether in a pot or in the garden – daffodils need a bright place to grow. It shouldn't necessarily be warm. They feel most comfortable at temperatures between 10 and 15 °C. The location should be sunny to partially shaded. Daffodils like to stand under or in front of groups of trees.

The soil should have good permeability. This prevents waterlogging from forming. This would cause the onions to rot. The following soil features are also important:

  • loamy
  • medium to high nutrient content
  • humos
  • moist
  • calcareous
  • pH value of approximately 7

Get to the onions: Plant the onions properly in the ground

The biggest danger that exists is that the onion dries out. It must be placed at a depth equal to three times its diameter. The planting hole is loosened up well. You can also add some compost (€12.00 on Amazon). The bulb is placed in the soil with the tip up and the roots down.

After planting, doing nothing is not possible

After planting the daffodils, remember the following points:

  • water in dry and hot weather
  • fertilize only during the growing season
  • share every four years
  • A layer of mulch helps in the summertime
  • Wintering is unnecessary
  • Propagation via bulbs occurs after flowering

Tips & Tricks

When planting, the daffodils can be placed next to daylilies, squills and hyacinths. They get along extremely well and complement each other visually.
