For many plants, regular fertilizer application is an important part of care. But what does it look like with horned violets? Do horned violets need a lot of fertilizer? And which fertilizers are actually suitable?
How and when should you fertilize horned violets?
Horn violets require a low to medium amount of fertilizer, although organic (compost, horn shavings, manure, bokashi) or mineral fertilizers can be used. Fertilize the bed once a year in spring, regularly mix liquid fertilizer into the water in the pot.
What are the nutrient requirements of horned violets?
Horn violets have low to medium nutrient requirements. For this reason, they do not need to be fertilized regularly and extensively. Only when they are no longer flowering is it necessary to add fertilizer to regain their vitality.
Too much fertilizer is harmful
A lot doesn't always help a lot. When it comes to horned violets, you should fertilize sparingly. Too much fertilizer causes these low perennials to grow tall. The shoots become too long and when the next storm or rain shower comes, there is a risk that the shoots will snap. As soon as the shoots grow too high, you should stop applying fertilizer immediately!
Suitable fertilizers for horned violets
Both organic and mineral fertilizers are suitable for horned violets. For mineral fertilizers (€24.00 on Amazon), you can choose conventional products from the hardware store or garden center. The following organic fertilizers are particularly suitable:
- Compost
- Horn shavings
- Crap
- Bokashi
If you plan to use the horned violet flowers as decoration for dessert dishes, for example, to add them to salads or to consume them in other ways, you should avoid mineral fertilizers. Remember: Small, regular doses of nutrients are better than too much at once.
Best time to fertilize
Horned violets in the bed should be fertilized in spring. A little fertilizer can be added to the root area again and again until the end of the flowering period. However, one fertilization per year is usually sufficient for perennial horned violets.
The exception: horned violets in a pot
A big exception are horned violets, which are in pots on the balcony, for example. After planting, the potting soil is sufficient for a few weeks. But then fertilization is required. A liquid fertilizer should be used that is mixed into the irrigation water.
Tips & Tricks
Good idea: Instead of fertilizing regularly, you should mulch the root area. This way you kill three birds with one stone. The nutrient supply is ensured, the water evaporates more slowly (water less) and the mulch layer protects against severe frost.
