For many years, the hydrangea was rarely found in our gardens because the plant was considered old-fashioned. Completely wrongly in our opinion, because the large inflorescences give gardens and green spaces a romantic flair. The hydrangea also decorates shady garden corners that are otherwise often difficult to design. The garden beauty impresses with a long flowering period.

When is the flowering time of hydrangeas?

The main flowering period of hydrangeas is from June to September. During this time, the magnificent inflorescences appear as long as the plants grow in a suitable location and are sufficiently fertilized. Hydrangeas are also suitable for shady garden corners.

The months of peak flowering

If the hydrangea feels comfortable in its location and has been sufficiently fertilized, the first flowers will appear in June. They remain until well into September and do not need to be removed even in winter. Covered with frost and snow, they give the garden a morbid charm.

Do not cut hydrangeas after flowering

Many hydrangea species begin to produce flowers for the next year at the end of the flowering period in late summer, when temperatures drop below 20 degrees during the day. It is therefore advisable to only cut out the dried branches in autumn so that you do not have to miss out on the flower decorations the following year.

Be careful of late frosts

Night frosts in spring can almost completely destroy the hydrangea's flower base. Therefore, make sure you have adequate winter protection, not just in harsh areas. It is advisable not to pull out any dead flowers in autumn, as the dead umbels provide natural protection against frost.

Tips & Tricks

Cut hydrangea flowers for the vase only relatively late in the flowering period, because only then will the petals have enough strength. If the flowers in the vase appear fragile and lose color, you can dry them and place them in bowls as attractive room decorations.
