Christmas roses are extremely easy to care for. In a favorable location, the ornamental plant, also known as Christmas rose or snow rose, blooms profusely for several years. If the Christmas rose does not bloom, it is usually because the snow rose was recently transplanted or planted too late.
Why isn't my Christmas rose blooming?
If a Christmas rose does not bloom, this could be due to the following factors: location that is too sunny, soil poor in lime, waterlogging or planting too late. To promote flower production, choose a shady location with clay and calcareous soil and plant in autumn.
What's wrong with the Christmas rose when it doesn't bloom?
In general, it can be said that the Christmas roses need time to settle into their new location. Sometimes they only bloom profusely after a few years.
There can also be various reasons why the snow rose does not produce flowers:
- Too sunny location
- Soil too poor in limestone
- Waterlogging
- Christmas rose planted too late
Planting snow roses at the right time
It is best to plant a Christmas rose in autumn, before frost sets in. Then the plant still has enough time to form its long roots and adapt to the conditions. Sometimes, but not always, a few flowers appear in the first winter.
When planted in spring, the Christmas rose almost always blooms the following winter.
This is what you need to consider when transplanting the Christmas rose
Christmas roses are alpine plants that thrive on clay and limestone soil. They do not tolerate waterlogging and form very long roots.
When transplanting the snow rose, prepare a location where the soil is deeply loose. It should be in the shade, because the Christmas rose doesn't like the sun that much.
Do not plant Christmas roses under conifers. The soil here is too acidic.
Christmas rose in the pot carefully get used to cool temperatures
As soon as the Christmas rose has faded in the pot, you can put it outside. However, it cannot tolerate drastic temperature fluctuations.
If the Christmas rose has been quite warm in the room, gradually accustom it to cooler temperatures.
You should plant them in the garden on a day when it is about as cold outside as in their current location.
Tips & Tricks
To improve the lime content of the soil, simply place a piece of white chalk (€15.00 on Amazon) in the planting hole. Chalk is carbonated lime. The piece dissolves in the earth and releases lime into the ground.
