There are many reasons why a kumquat doesn't bloom. Some causes can be remedied in the short term, others need a little more time. But with a little patience you will be able to get your kumquat to bloom again.
Why is my kumquat not blooming and what can I do?
If a kumquat does not bloom, the following reasons can be responsible: too young, insufficient winter rest, little fertilizer, drafts, low humidity or too calcareous soil or water. Remedial measures include relocation, moisture adjustment, and checking soil and water.
If you just bought your kumquat, then you don't have to worry. Take good care of your plant and it will definitely bloom next year. She needs some time to get used to it.
Small cause – big effect
If you have owned the kumquat for a long time, then you should ask yourself the following questions: Did the kumquat have sufficient winter rest with temperatures of a maximum of 10 °C and was it then slowly acclimated to the warmth and fertilized again?
Is the kumquat possibly in a draft, for example near a constantly open window or the balcony door? Is the humidity high enough and the lime content in the soil and irrigation water low? All of these things can be the cause of your kumquat not blooming. However, they can be remedied quite easily.
Possible causes in brief:
- the plant is still too young
- insufficient winter rest
- too little fertilizer
- Draft
- too low humidity
- irrigation water or soil that is too calcareous
This is what you can do if your kumquat isn't blooming
If the plant is still too young, just wait and see. The same applies if your kumquat did not have sufficient winter rest. Then you have to wait until next year for flowering. You can replace calcareous soil. If your tap water has a lot of lime, then use rainwater for watering. You can determine the limescale content with test strips (€2.00 on Amazon) from the pharmacy or drugstore.
If your kumquat gets too much draft, they will change their location. The same applies if the plant gets too little light or heat. If the humidity is too low, you can carefully spray your kumquat with lime-free water or place a container with water in the immediate vicinity. Evaporation increases the humidity in the area.
