The worm fern was previously known to be helpful against tapeworms. Very few people know him today. It could be particularly interesting for gardeners with pest infestations on their favorites
How can I use worm fern against slugs?
To use worm fern against snails, you can place fronds around plants, make a worm fern slurry diluted 1:10 and pour over plants and soil, or use a cold extract of the fronds. Worm fern also helps against lice and serves as fertilizer.
Snails don't like worm fern
Snails prefer to take a detour rather than crawl over a place where they have direct contact with worm fern. They don't like this plant at all. No wonder: it is considered poisonous to both humans and animals. Consumption can, among other things, cause nerve damage. The snails probably know this instinctively
Use roots and fronds
You can use the roots or fronds of the worm fern against snails. Both parts of the plant contain the deterrent substances. But it is much less complicated to simply cut off the fronds instead of digging up the roots.
Make and use a worm fern manure
A worm fern manure has a good effect against snails. How to make these:
- choose a large container e.g. E.g. plastic bucket, plastic tub (not made of metal)
- Add water
- add fresh, chopped or dried and grated worm fern
- if applicable Add some rock dust to counter the later smell
- mix well
- cover with a cloth or grid (air can come out, but bugs can't get in)
- stir once a day
When mixing the manure, remember that there are 1 kg of fresh worm fern or 150 g of dried worm fern for every 10 liters of water. After an average of 2 weeks, fermentation is complete and the manure is ready. Now she is waiting to be used.
The manure should be diluted 1:10. For example, you can add them to the irrigation water and pour them over the plants. Another option is to spray them over the ground. Spray it in a circle around plants at risk of being eaten by snails.
Other methods with worm fern
The worm fern, which changes generations, can be used as a cold extract. To do this, the fresh fronds are soaked in water for 24 hours. The result is sieved and used undiluted. It also helps to simply place the fronds of the worm fern around the endangered plants or on the edge of the bed.
Tips & Tricks
A manure or a cold extract from worm fern also helps against lice and other vermin. At the same time it provides good fertilization for the plants.
