There are two related but different genera of coneflower, namely the yellow coneflower (Latin Rudbeckia) and the red coneflower (Latin Echinacea). There are different species of both genera, but they are all quite easy to care for.
What types of coneflower are there?
Coneflower varieties include the red coneflower (Echinacea) in various colors such as purplish pink, white, orange and red, and the yellow coneflower (Rudbeckia) with colors such as golden yellow, reddish, reddish brown and copper. Both varieties are easy to care for and also offer double versions.
What types of coneflower are there?
Unlike the name suggests, the red coneflower comes in different colors. In addition to plants in the classic purple pink, the coneflower is also available in white, orange or bright red, sometimes with very decorative double flowers. The height varies between 60 cm and one meter. In its American homeland, the coneflower grows up to 1.50 m tall.
Rudbeckia (yellow coneflower) is also available in different types. The golden yellow color variant with a dark center is classic, but reddish, reddish-brown and copper-colored flowers and color gradients also occur. As with Echinacea, there are also filled versions.
Small varieties of Rudbeckia grow to around 20 – 25 cm or a maximum of 40 cm tall. They are ideal for border plantings and containers, while the slit-leaved coneflower makes a very attractive background planting at a height of up to 2 m.

The particularly unusual types of coneflowers include the filled variants. The Echinacea purpurea Razzmatazz variety is a special eye-catcher with its purple-pink flowers and a height of around one meter. The Hot Papaya variety is equally decorative, also double, but this time with bright orange-red flowers and slightly smaller with a height of up to 80 cm.
Medicinal herb Echinacea
Echinacea purpurea or Echinacea angustifolia is often used to strengthen the immune system if people are prone to infections, but it also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. It also helps with existing infections such as bronchitis and colds. Externally it is used primarily in the form of a tincture for poorly healing wounds, boils, abscesses and even psoriasis.
