The optimal location for the water dost (Eupatorium cannabinum) is in moist, loamy depressions, on bank zones or in sparse floodplain forests. It prefers partial shade, but can also cope with full sun if there is enough moisture. Wind protection through larger bushes and trees is advantageous.
An optimal flowering plant for moist locations

Many hobby gardeners plant waterweed in the garden because of its use as a medicinal herb, although its effect is controversial, especially in higher doses. The water spray, which sometimes spreads undesirably, is not extremely toxic, but can be irritating to the skin if touched without gloves.
