From the dwarf astilbe to the tall astilbe, there are numerous varieties in different shades of white, pink, red and purple. The height ranges from around 10 cm to two meters. That's enough choice for every gardener.
What types of astilbe are there?
Astilbene varieties vary in color, size and flowering time; from dwarf astilbes such as Chinese Astilbe (Astilbe chinensis) and small astilbe (Astilbe simplicifolia) to tall astilbe (Astilbe chinensis var.davidii) and garden astilbe (Astilbe x arendsii). The colors range from white, pink, red to purple and the flowering period is from May to September.
Astilbes are hardy, quite robust and don't require too much care. Because they are non-toxic, they are well suited to family gardens. The flowering period varies from May to September depending on the species and variety. Plant the different varieties specifically and you can enjoy the feathery flowers all summer long.
Low-remaining astilbene
The low-growing astilbes include the Chinese splendor (Astilbe chinensis), they grow to around 50 to 60 cm tall and only show their pink flowers relatively late. The “Pumila” variety can even tolerate a sunny location. It is only 20 to 25 cm tall and blooms in purple-pink from July to September. It belongs to the carpet astilbes, also called dwarf astilbes.
The Astilbe simplicifolia, the Small Astilbe, also remains very small with a growth height of up to 50 cm. It originally comes from Japan and is available in different colors. The Astilbe hybrida crispa, which is around 15 to 20 cm small, blooms in July and has foliage reminiscent of curled parsley. The Astilbe simplicifolia grows very delicately, the flower spikes hang slightly over.
Tall-growing splendor
The High Astilbe (Astilbe chinensis var. davidii), with a height of 1.5 to 2 m, is the largest of the known cultivated Astilbes. The garden astilbe (Astilbe x arendsii) also grows relatively tall at 60 to 120 cm. These include, for example, the white-flowering variety “Bergkristall” with a height of around one meter.
