Angelica, which grows up to two meters high, belongs to the umbelliferous family (Apiaceae) and originally comes from the far north of Europe. The medicinal angelica (Angelica archangelica) has been used in medicine for centuries, especially its roots. The medicinal plant can be cultivated very well in the garden, but needs a sunny location and a lot of space.
What location does the angelica plant need?
Angelica prefers a sunny, wind-protected location as its active ingredients and aromas are better developed in the sun. The medicinal plant also requires moist, nutrient-rich soil and sufficient space to grow.

Basically, angelica grows in sunny, partially shaded or shady locations. However, the medicinal plant only develops its active ingredients and the typical aroma in sunny places. In addition, the plant should be as sheltered from the wind as possible so that its very tall flower umbels are not simply bent over in the next gust of wind. Angelica also prefers moist, nutrient-rich soil with fine, crumbly soil. Please also keep in mind that the plant needs a lot of space and is not suitable for underplanting.
Tip
Be careful when collecting from the wild: Angelica can quickly be confused with the very similar but deadly poisonous water hemlock as well as the equally dangerous giant hogweed.
