Like so many thick-leaved plants, the houseleek (Sempervivum) is characterized by its extreme frugality. The outdoor succulents, available in numerous shapes and colors, withstand drought as well as extreme heat or cold. Therefore, the mountain plants can overwinter outdoors without worry.
How should you overwinter houseleeks?
Houseleek (Sempervivum) can easily overwinter outdoors as these mountain plants tolerate drought, heat and cold well. Only waterlogging should be avoided. In the pot they should be protected from ice and water and have good drainage.
Overwinter houseleek outdoors if possible
Houseleeks are originally native to high mountains such as the Alps, the Balkans and the Caucasus. As mountain plants, they are very tolerant of unfavorable living conditions, at least when it comes to dryness and cold. Only moisture and waterlogging are not tolerated, which can become a problem in wet winters. However, even very deep and persistent frost does not affect the plants at all. For this reason, houseleeks can also overwinter unprotected outdoors in pots, but should be protected from ice or water.
Tip
Plant the succulents in as little lean soil as possible - the less, the better. However, good drainage should be ensured so that excess water can flow away as quickly as possible.
