Is meadowfoam edible and how can you use it?

The meadowfoam herb is edible and can be used in moderation as a salad addition, in soups, on bread and butter or in herbal dishes. Harvest before flowering and do not consume in large quantities to avoid stomach and kidney irritation.

Where does meadowfoam grow?

As the name suggests, meadowfoam likes to grow in meadows, but these should be moist. An old name for this plant is “hungerweed”. This is also not unfounded, because where the meadowfoam thrives, less grass grows and therefore there is little hay for the cattle later.

When and how do you harvest meadowfoam?

You can collect the meadowfoam on moist meadows, in open forests or along roadsides, preferably in the months of April and May. When collecting along roadsides, make sure that there are not many vehicles on the road, that no dogs are being walked and that no fields next door are being sprayed with pesticides or artificial fertilizers.

The above-ground herb is collected before the flowers form. Do not pull out the herb but cut it off with sharp scissors. The younger the leaves are, the milder they taste. However, foamy cabbage should never be consumed in large quantities at once, as it then has an irritating effect on the stomach and kidneys.

How to use meadowfoam?

The meadowfoam is usually used fresh and not dried. If necessary, cut the leaves into small pieces. They taste great on a sandwich or in a fresh salad. You can also use it to season soups or sauces very well.

It is best to add the foam cabbage to hot dishes only after cooking. Mixed with other herbs, meadowfoam is also very suitable for preparing herb butter, herb quark or other herb dishes. You can use the flowers as an edible decoration. A tea can also be made from meadowfoam to combat spring fatigue and to strengthen the immune system.
