The Waldsteinia ternata or trefoil golden strawberry is particularly easy to propagate because it produces plenty of runners. The Waldsteinia geoides (golden strawberry or hungarian root) does not offer this option, but it can be easily propagated by division.
How to propagate Waldsteinia?
Propagate Waldsteinia made easy: Divide the plant in spring or autumn by cutting off a root section and planting it in a desired location with organic fertilizer. With the Waldsteinia ternata, runners can also be separated and replanted.
Propagation by seeds
The easy-care Waldsteinias can be propagated by sowing, but it is best to buy the seeds from specialist retailers. Collecting them yourself from your own plants is too time-consuming. Especially when you consider that the plants are much easier to propagate in other ways. However, you also have to search carefully for the seeds in specialist shops, while young plants are available in abundance.
Propagation by sharing
Propagation by division is easily possible with all types of non-toxic Waldsteinia. Ideal times are spring or autumn. To do this, dig up the plant and use a sharp spade to separate some of the roots. Plant this again at the desired location.
Add some organic fertilizer such as well-rotted compost or horn shavings to the planting hole (€32.00 on Amazon). Insert the root piece, cover it with fresh soil and press it down well. Then water the roots well. In the first winter you protect the Waldsteinia from frost, later this is no longer necessary.
Propagation through offshoots
You don't actually have to propagate the three-leaf golden strawberry (lat. Waldsteinia ternata), because it does that all by itself. It forms plenty of runners. You can separate these and replant them anywhere. At the beginning, the young plants need some fertilizer and plenty of water. Be sure to avoid waterlogging, otherwise the delicate roots will rot.
Cutting the Waldsteinia
The Waldsteinie does not need regular pruning. However, you should always remove dead or diseased plant parts promptly. If you want to prevent your three-leaf golden strawberry from spreading too much, then put a root barrier in the ground when you plant it. Alternatively, regularly prick or cut off the rhizomes and above-ground runners of the plant.
