The star jasmine, which requires little care, looks great. In addition, it has an intoxicatingly strong scent. Read on and find out how you can easily propagate it!
How to propagate star jasmine?
To propagate star jasmine, you can sow seeds or cut cuttings. Sow the seeds immediately after harvesting and allow them to pre-swell. Cut 10 cm long cuttings in August, remove the lower leaves and place them in potting soil.
Sowing – step by step towards your goal
In principle, sowing star jasmine is difficult. But with the right background knowledge, you should be able to propagate them using seeds. First, you should get star jasmine seeds. You can purchase these commercially or take them from an existing plant.
Harvesting seeds from a plant
The seeds ripen in late summer and are best sown immediately, as their ability to germinate will decrease later. They are located in the narrow pods of the climbing plant. Pick the pods and open them. The seeds inside are elongated and flat.
Sowing the seeds
How sowing works:
- Soak seeds in water for 1 to 2 days
- Prepare pots with sowing soil (€6.00 on Amazon)
- Sow seeds lightly to a maximum depth of 0.5 cm (light germinator)
- Moisten the substrate and keep it moist
- place in a warm, bright place
- ideal germination temperature: 20 to 22 °C
Propagation from cuttings: Easier than you think
The propagation of star jasmine cuttings is much easier. It is best to use head cuttings for this. You can take the cuttings during the thinning cut after the plant has flowered (around August).
The cuttings should be 10 cm long and cut off from the main branches. Remove the lower leaves and place each in a pot with potting soil. The cuttings should be rooted in a warm and bright place until spring, when the soil was constantly slightly moist (not wet, as these cuttings rot quickly).
Care and care for the young plants
In winter the young plants should definitely be indoors (not hardy). Ambient temperatures between 5 and 10 °C are ideal. In spring you can repot the plants and place them in a sunny location. A climbing aid is also important, as this plant grows up to 10 m high!
Tip
Attention: The seeds and pods as well as the other plant parts of star jasmine are poisonous to humans and animals!
