Due to its Mediterranean origins (Canary Islands, Madeira), the bird of paradise flower is unfortunately not winter-hardy in this country. So if you want to admire their flowers every year, you should overwinter them properly.
How do I overwinter a bird of paradise flower?
In order to successfully overwinter a bird of paradise flower (Strelitzia reginae), it should be kept frost-free at 10-14 °C in a shady place. Water the plant sparingly to keep the soil moist and avoid fertilizer during the winter months.
Finding suitable accommodation
Since the 'Parrot Flower' cannot tolerate frost, it should be overwintered frost-free. Temperatures between 10 and 14 °C are ideal for wintering. A shady place is also important. Bring the plant into the house from mid/late September and place it in one of the following locations, for example:
- Staircase
- Bedroom
- Hallway
- Winter Garden
Strelitzia reginae hardly needs any care in winter. Fertilizing should be avoided entirely. You should only water this plant every now and then (sparingly!) so that the soil does not dry out.
Tip
If the bird of paradise flower does not bloom in spring, it could be that the temperatures in the wintering quarters are too warm. This plant needs a rest period in which it can gather new strength.
