The hammer bush, also known as the red hammer bush, comes from Mexico. You have to overwinter it in a frost-free place because it cannot tolerate sub-zero temperatures. In our latitudes, hammer bushes are therefore grown in containers.
How do I properly overwinter a hammer bush?
In order to overwinter a hammer bush successfully, it should be brought indoors before the first frost. Store there at temperatures between 10 and 15 degrees, water sparingly and do not fertilize. From the end of May, the hammer bush can be put outdoors again.
Bring the hammer bush into the house before the frost
The hammer bush overwinters indoors at temperatures between 10 and 15 degrees. You can keep the shrub in the winter garden or even in the room.
If the temperatures fall below 10 degrees, the bush loses its leaves. But they will sprout again next spring. If you don't have space in the house, the hammer bush can also be overwintered in the dark basement if necessary.
Be sure to bring the hammer bush indoors before the first frost. It stays in winter quarters until the end of May. During winter rest, care for the hammer bush by:
- water sparingly regularly
- do not fertilize
- pay attention to pests
Tip
Before you put the hammer bush outdoors again after the winter break, slowly get it used to the fresh air.
