Real jasmine can live for many years. In order to grow the pretty climbing plant in a pot or bucket for several years, you need to follow a few care tips. Above all, the ornamental shrub must be properly overwintered - even if you keep it as a houseplant.
How to care for perennial jasmine?
To grow jasmine as a perennial, you should keep it in a pot, water it regularly, spray it, fertilize it, cut it and repot it. In winter the plant needs to hibernate in a cool and bright place for successful flowering next year.
Grow perennial jasmine
Jasmine is not hardy. In our part of the world it therefore has to be grown in a bucket. Alternatively, you can of course plant it directly in the garden, but you have to dig it up again before the first frost. However, this causes considerable damage to the plant, so it is better to grow it in a pot straight away.
Proper care is important
Whether you grow jasmine in a pot, as a bonsai or in the room - proper care is important if the ornamental plant is to be kept for several years:
- Water regularly
- spray occasionally
- fertilize
- cutting
- repotting
Never let the potting soil dry out completely, but definitely avoid waterlogging. Regular fertilizer applications are necessary during the vegetation phase.

Older specimens produce fewer and fewer flowers over time. You can rejuvenate these plants so that you can enjoy them for longer.
Short the jasmine by two thirds before budding in spring. In the next two years the jasmine will not bloom at all or only a little. However, the blossoms are even more abundant in the following years.

True jasmine is not hardy. If you want to grow it as a perennial, you have to bring it indoors in the winter. It hibernates in a cool, bright place that must not be drafty.
Even if you want to maintain jasmine as a perennial houseplant in the flower window, you have to ensure a winter break. During this time the jasmine needs to be kept cool at around 10 degrees. If it is too warm at the location, the flowers will fail next year.
