While it appears rather inconspicuous in the first year, it will attract everyone's attention in the second year of its existence - the gold paint. To ensure that it survives the first winter until it blooms, it should be protected from frost.
How can I properly overwinter the gold lacquer?
In order to overwinter the gold lacquer successfully, plants grown in pots should be kept bright and frost-free indoors, while garden plants should either be cut back and covered with brushwood or compost or kept in cold houses orCold frame boxes can be overwintered.
Winter frost-free inside and protected outside
Without protection, the gold lacquer is mercilessly exposed to frost and freezes. It is considered to be partially hardy. Above all, varieties that have double flowers are generally considered to be more sensitive than others. They should preferably only be cultivated in pots and put in in late autumn and overwintered indoors in a bright place.
A gold lacquer that is meant to be left outside over the winter can:
- cut down to the base in autumn
- be covered with brushwood or compost
- overwintering in the cold frame
- wintering in a cold house
