While in earlier times it was considered a field weed, today it has the reputation of being an almost extinct plant. When used correctly in the garden, the corn wheel looks great as a perennial. But how do you sow them?
When and how should you sow corn cowl?
For a successful corn wheel sowing, the seeds should be sown directly outdoors in autumn (ideally in September) or between February and March. A location in full sun and nutrient-rich, sandy soil is important. The sowing depth is 0.5 to 1 cm and the germination time is 2 to 3 weeks.
When is the ideal sowing time?
The seeds should be sown in autumn. Why? Because they are cold germs. This means they need cooler temperatures to be stimulated to germinate. It's best to sow them outdoors in September.
If you forgot to sow in the fall, you can still sow the seeds between February and March. In general, if the seeds are sown in autumn, the corn wheel flowers will appear much earlier the following year.
Don't wait too long
If you have bought the seeds of a corn wheel or collected them yourself, you should not wait too long before sowing them. The seeds of the corn wheel can only germinate for a few months.
Do direct sowing of the cold germs
This is what you need to consider when sowing outdoors:
- Seeds do not need to be pre-grown
- sow directly outdoors
- distribute widely or in individual stands
- rake lightly (sowing depth: 0.5 to 1 cm)
- sow densely
- prefers sandy soils
- keep moist
- Germination time: 2 to 3 weeks
The perfect location
Corn rads grow best in full sun. Good neighbors in perennial borders, for example, include ornamental grasses, cranesbills, mallows and borage. The soil should be nutrient-rich and can be dry from time to time after growth. This perennial tolerates drought without any problems.
Warning: These seeds are poisonous
You should not handle the seeds of the corn wheel carelessly. They are poisonous. They contain saponins, which can lead to symptoms of poisoning. Therefore: Keep the seeds out of the reach of children. You should also remember not to sow these seeds where there are grazing animals such as cows, sheep, goats and horses!
Tip
Corn wheel seeds have to be sown every year, as corn wheel seeds are annual. But it is not uncommon for the plant to self-sow.
