Originally, the Judas tree - also known to many gardeners as the heart tree or love tree because of the characteristic shape of its foliage - is native to the warm and sunny climes along the Mediterranean and in Asia Minor. The mostly pink, but also white flowers appear in early spring before the leaves emerge, with the Judas tree having an interesting peculiarity.
When and where does the Judas tree bloom?
On the Judas tree, the pink or white flowers appear in spring before the leaves emerge, also directly on the trunk. The splendor of flowers on perennial branches and twigs is a botanical speci alty known as kaulifloria.
Judas tree even blooms on the trunk
Most European flowering trees only bloom on the young shoots, in complete contrast to the Judas tree: It also develops its flowers on perennial branches and twigs and even directly on the trunk. This stem flowering - botanically known as kaulifloria - is normally only observed on tropical trees, which is why the Judas tree is a real rarity in this respect. The flowers appear on short clusters and are structured similarly to butterfly flowers. In addition to the splendor of flowers in spring, the Judas tree also delights with its magnificent autumnal play of colors, as its leaves change color very intensely.
Tip
The Judas tree is a legume and, after flowering, develops pods about six centimeters long, which often remain hanging until spring and can be used for propagation.
