The desert rose, which can easily be grown from seeds, is often cultivated as a houseplant, even though it is poisonous. There is also a plant that has the same name but is completely different
Does the desert rose need warm water to open?
The desert rose Anastatica hierochuntica opens when placed in warm water, while the desert rose Adenium obesum copes well with drought and does not require warm water. For Anastatica hierochuntica, immersion in water should be short to avoid mold formation.
Anastatica hierochuntica – dries up when there is a lack of water
Anastatica hierochuntica is also known as the real rose Jericho or resurrection plant. When it's dry, it curls up into a ball. If rain falls on the plant or if it is placed in a bowl of warm water, it will unfold again. The green leaves are the cotyledons of the seedlings.
Adenium obesum – stores water
It looks completely different with Adenium obesum:
- Watering with warm water has no significant effects
- Plant tolerates dry periods well
- does not contract when dry
- draws from her water storage in her trunk
Tip
The desert rose Anastatica hierochuntica should only be briefly placed in warm water. Otherwise there is a risk of mold.
