From May to June they delight with their pompous flowers. Not only can they be cultivated outdoors, but some people plant them in a container. Do I need a large bucket for this or can it also be done in a pot? What should you generally pay attention to?
How do you grow peonies in a container?
Peonies can be grown in a pot using a large container (at least 40 cm in diameter and 50 cm deep) made of terracotta, clay (€15.00 on Amazon) or stone. For optimal conditions, the location should receive at least 4 hours of sun per day, a drainage layer should be created and the plant should be planted in nutrient-rich substrate. Wintering is possible with appropriate protective measures.
Bucket depth, bucket diameter and material
Small pots are not suitable for peonies. These plants quickly gain mass and become very large. Therefore, you should use large containers. Plastic buckets are less suitable. Those made of terracotta, clay (€15.00 on Amazon) or stone are more suitable. They should be at least 40 cm in diameter and 50 cm deep.
Locations that are available
You are free to choose your location. It is important that the peony gets at least 4 hours of sun per day. The sunnier, the more profusely it will bloom. Both balconies and terraces are ideal locations. Preferably place the plant in an airy place to minimize the risk of fungal diseases.

Winter properly in the bucket
You should winterize your peonies from the end of October. Cut down perennial peonies and place the pot in a protected place such as on the wall of the house or a wall. The root area is covered with brushwood or leaves. At temperatures below -10 °C, the bucket should be covered with fleece or jute.
It's better to put shrub peonies in pots
Basically, you should plant shrub peonies in a container rather than perennial peonies. The latter take a long time until they are properly rooted and therefore also a long time before they bloom for the first time. In addition, they tolerate repotting rather poorly and can also take a break from flowering as a result.
Tip
If you have the opportunity, it is better to plant the peonies outdoors. Most people have had bad experiences with the plants in the pot. Often they don't bloom.
