The delicate Adonis rose originally grows in pine forests, on slopes and on dry lawns. How do you plant it so that it also pleases and thrives in your home garden?
How do you plant the Adonis rose correctly?
The Adonis rose is planted in early autumn or spring in full sun locations with loose, permeable, sandy and nutrient-poor substrate. The spring Adonis flower blooms from April to May, the summer Adonis flower from May to June. Warning: The plant is poisonous to animals.
When is the best time to plant the perennial?
Early autumn is the best time to plant the Adonis rose. Then it can grow and bloom next spring. Alternatively, you can plant the perennial as a seedling in spring.
What requirements are placed on the location?
The spring Adonis florets prefer to grow in full sun locations, for example in rock gardens or on dry meadows. On the other hand, the Amur Adonis rose prefers slightly shady, cooler locations, for example on the edge of a tree.
What should the substrate be like?
The substrate into which the Adonis florets take root should ideally be as follows:
- easy
- permeable
- sandy
- deep (as roots up to 1 m deep are created)
- dry to fresh
- likes limestone
- rather low in nutrients
Which companion plants are suitable?
Adonis florets look good planted on their own. But they also create beautiful accents with other plants. It is important that you give them a planting distance of at least 30 cm. The following perennials are suitable as companion plants:
- Bush anemone
- Stem Silver Thistle
- Gold Spurge
- White pasque flower
- Ball flowers
- Blue pillow
- Dwarf Iris
- Carpet Primroses
When does the Adonis rose bloom?
Depending on the species, Adonis florets bloom at different times. The spring Adonis florets usually bloom from April to May. In warm regions their flowers sometimes appear as early as the end of February. The summer Adonis florets bloom from May to June.
How do you sow the Adonis rose?
Although the Adonis rose can be propagated by dividing its rootstock, sowing is preferable. The plant doesn't like being dug up and often dies afterwards. In addition to self-sowing, you can tackle direct sowing.
How it works:
- between February and April or between September and October
- Let seeds soak for 1 day
- sow directly outdoors
- Sow 1 to 1.5 cm deep
- Germination temperature: 15 to 18 °C
- Germination within 10 to 12 days
Tip
When planting, remember that Adonis florets are extremely poisonous to animals such as dogs, cats, horses and rodents! You should therefore not plant them on pastures or outdoor areas!
