You recently put the water lily in the pond. Did you also consider all the essential aspects? Otherwise, you don't need to be surprised that your water lily is not growing or is only growing poorly. Here you can find out why it could be!
Why isn't my water lily growing?
If a water lily does not grow, location-related causes such as water that is too cold or low in oxygen, too much shade or competition, as well as care-related reasons such as incorrect fertilization or lack of nutrients can be responsible. Diseases, pests and incorrect overwintering can also inhibit growth.
Location-related causes
In the most common cases, there are location-related causes that weaken the water lily so much that it doesn't want to grow. These causes can be present, for example:
- Water is too cold
- Location is too shady
- Competition displaces the water lily
- Water is too low in oxygen
- Water is too turbulent e.g. B. flowing, bubbles, fountains, etc.
Something may have gone wrong during planting. You may have planted your water lily too deep and it is struggling to reach the surface of the water. Depending on the species and variety, the water depth should be measured.
In addition, insufficient space has a negative effect on the growth of water lilies. The floating leaves of water lilies need enough space on the water surface. It is important that they are not overgrown by other plants.
Nursing-Related Causes
Usually water lilies do not need any special care. The most important thing is fertilization. If you fertilize too much, the water lilies can die. Too much fertilizer spoils the environment in the pond and the water lilies die.
On the other hand, a nutrient deficiency has a negative impact on growth. If there is a nutrient deficiency, the leaves of water lilies are often pale green to yellow. In this case, it helps if you distribute long-term fertilizer beads (€5.00 on Amazon) around the root area of the plant.
Other causes
There are other causes that can inhibit growth. These include illnesses. It is not uncommon for water lilies to be attacked by fungal pathogens. They destroy the foliage, roots and/or stems. The plant then stops growing. In addition, a pest infestation, which is accompanied by massive damage, can lead to a stop in growth.
Incorrect overwintering also has a fatal effect on poorly winter-hardy water lilies. Tropical species in particular freeze to death in the open when unprotected. They should be relocated in the fall.
Tip
If you have placed your water lily in a plant basket, you can change the location or planting at any time if the growth has stopped.
