How to preserve a rose?
To preserve a rose, you can use methods such as glycerin preservation, silica granules/preservation in silica gel, s alt or washing powder. These procedures preserve the color and structure of the flower for a longer period of time.
Air drying is only recommended to a limited extent
Probably the most well-known method of preserving roses is also the least suitable: the roses are sprayed all over with hairspray and then hung upside down to dry in a dark and warm place. Although this method usually works quite well, the roses preserved in this way become very brittle and are difficult to clean.
Not only beautiful, but also tasty: candied roses
Perhaps not necessarily suitable for preservation for eternity, but a great gift idea - for Valentine's Day, for example - is the option of dipping rose petals in sugar syrup and thus not only preserving them, but also turning them into a sweet treat. However, you should only use home-grown roses, as purchased specimens are poisoned with pesticides. You get the sugar syrup by boiling a cup of sugar and a cup of water together and allowing the resulting solution to cool to around 60 °C.
Optimal: Preserving roses with glycerin
However, the method of preserving roses with glycerin is more durable. To do this, mix glycerin (€14.00 on Amazon) (available in pharmacies) and water in a ratio of 1:2 and fill the mixture into a vase. Now place the rose you want to preserve in there - first cut the stem at a slight angle - and wait until you notice small droplets emerging from the petals. At this point the rose has soaked up glycerin and is now perfectly preserved. However, make sure that the flower no longer comes into contact with water.
Perfect: Keep rose petals fresh with silica
Another very successful method is placing the rose in silica granules or silica gel. Alternatively, you can also use s alt or washing powder; both products have the same effect: they remove the water from the flower and thus preserve it. This gentle drying also has the advantage that the beautiful colors of the rose are preserved.
Tip
In addition, roses can also be dried by dipping them in hot, colorless wax. However, you should immediately cool the flower in ice water afterwards.
