Most roses bloom in the summer months, although some varieties only show their blooms for a few weeks, others until the first frost.
When are roses blooming?
The flowering time of roses varies depending on the variety: single-blooming roses bloom for about 5-6 weeks between the end of May and mid-June, while repeat-blooming roses have their main bloom in June and produce a second, weaker bloom in August. Wild roses bloom from the beginning of May.
Differentiation between once-blooming and multiple-blooming roses
Various bed and small shrub roses in particular impress with their extremely long flowering period and tirelessly produce new flowers. They are one of the so-called frequently blooming rose varieties, which - in contrast to the once-blooming and wild roses - start the flowering season quite late. However, not all roses that bloom more often are so tireless, some also bloom for a much shorter time or simply replant, i.e. H. They form a secondary flower after the main flower.
Once blooming roses
Once-blooming roses often begin blooming between late May and mid-June, with flowers lasting about five to six weeks. Many of the historical roses or the so-called park roses belong to this group, because modern breeds are usually trained to bloom longer. Nevertheless, roses that bloom once have a big advantage because they are significantly more winter hardy than many roses that bloom more often.
Frequently blooming roses
Many roses that bloom more often have their main bloom in June and produce a second, although often weaker, secondary bloom in August. Varieties with a long flowering period should be pruned regularly, because removing spent heads ensures that new flowers continue to form. This measure also maintains the he alth of the roses, as dead flowers are often a gateway for fungi and other pathogens.
Tip
The various wild roses bloom particularly early, often showing their flowers at the beginning of May. Although these do not reassemble in summer, they adorn themselves with wonderful red rose hips from late summer onwards.
