Which location is optimal for tulips?

The ideal location for tulips offers sun or partial shade, warm temperatures, a sheltered location for long-stemmed varieties and well-drained, humus-rich, loose and sandy-loamy soil to avoid waterlogging - the biggest enemy of tulip bulbs.

Light and temperature conditions

Tulips show their most beautiful side in a sunny, warm location. In addition, the spring flowers have no objection to a semi-shady location in the protection of the canopy of mighty deciduous trees. Long-stemmed noble varieties also prefer a position protected from the wind so that the slender flower stalks do not bend. You can safely place the robust wild species and dwarf varieties with their stable stems in a wind-exposed location.

The ideal soil condition

When choosing a location, keep the biggest enemy of tulip bulbs in mind. We're talking about permanent moisture that kills every bulb flower. Therefore, choose a soil with these attributes:

  • Fresh to moderately dry soil
  • Humos, loose and well drained
  • Preferably sandy-loamy

For tulips in balcony boxes, we recommend enriching the potting soil with sand, perlite or lava granules.
