A knight's star is thrown away far too quickly after its winter symphony of flowers. In fact, the flower bulb has a vital life force that allows it to be cultivated for several years. With the right care program, you can quickly get an extra bloom from a Hippeastrum in the summer. We'll tell you here which strategy you can use to get an amaryllis to bloom again.
How do I make an amaryllis bloom again?
To get an amaryllis to bloom again, cut off withered flowers and yellowed main stems, leave the foliage and fertilize regularly. Cultivate the plant outdoors in summer and gradually reduce the amount of watering water in autumn and give it a cool rest.
Cut properly after flowering
With the end of the flowering season you set the course for a magnificent repetition of the flower festival. The care program is now aimed at saving energy and refilling the empty depots. To ensure that a knight's star blooms again quickly, proceed as follows:
- Cut off each wilted flower with the short inflorescence stem from the main stem
- Only cut the main shaft when it has yellowed
- Place the scissors 4-5 cm above the onion
The green leaves of an amaryllis remain unaffected by these pruning measures. If it is possible to get a knight's star to bloom again, the foliage has the important task of providing sufficient supply to the inflorescence.
This summer care program attracts another bloom
The faded knight's star lingers in the half-shaded window seat until the beginning of the warm season. Water the plant regularly, preferably over the saucer. Every 14 days, administer a liquid fertilizer (€14.00 at Amazon) for subtropical flowering plants to give new impetus to growth. From mid-May, the bed and balcony of your amaryllis offer the ideal climatic conditions to once again boast of paradisiacal flowers in the open air. This is how it works:
- Place the knight's star and the culture pot in the ground in a sunny, warm location
- Alternatively, place the flower pot on the balcony so that there is no direct sun at lunchtime
- Water the amaryllis regularly and continue to fertilize every 14 days
Leave the leaves on the plant until they are completely absorbed. At the same time, fresh leaves will now flourish, from which, with a little luck, a new inflorescence will proudly rise.
After the flowering is before the flowering – this is what happens in autumn
Have you succeeded in getting an amaryllis to bloom again quickly following these instructions? Then there's nothing wrong with getting the knight's star in the mood for a colorful get-together at Christmas time. Following this timetable you can do it:
- From the end of July, gradually reduce the amount of irrigation water and no longer fertilize
- At the end of summer flowering, cut off the withered flower heads as soon as possible to prevent seeds from growing
- Do not remove main stems and leaves until they are completely dead
If the temperatures fall below 15 degrees Celsius, put away the Ritterstern. In a cool, dark room, the tuber regenerates in the dry substrate until the end of October/beginning of November. You have now reached the repotting agenda item in the care protocol and at the same time the starting point for another vegetation cycle for your amaryllis.
Tip
Not every Ritterstern variety has the potential for repeat flowering. At the end of the first bloom period, take a look at the leaves. If these are streaked with black stripes, the plant is infected with fungal spores and should be discarded.
