The Dipladenia is quite easy to care for, whether it is a Mandevilla or a hybrid plant like the Sundaville. However, to ensure that it blooms profusely, it should be cut back regularly. You can do this before or after wintering.
How do I cut Dipladenia shoots correctly?
When cutting Dipladenia shoots, only the old shoots should be shortened by about two thirds, as the plant flowers on young shoots. Pruning can be done in spring or autumn and suitable shoots can be used as cuttings.
Which shoots can I cut off from Dipladenia?
Since the Mandevilla flowers on the young shoots, you can only prune the old shoots. You can safely shorten this by about two-thirds of its length. If you prune late in the spring, the plant will not produce flowers until late in the year.
As an alternative to spring pruning, you can also prune the Dipladenia in autumn before it moves to its winter quarters. Then it requires less space there. Be sure to overwinter the Mandevilla in a bright place and not too cold, otherwise it will not bloom as profusely as you expect, at least not next year.
Can I use the shoots as cuttings?
You can easily grow a Dipladenia from a cut shoot that you use as a cutting. The shoot should either be fairly fresh or slightly woody so that good rooting is possible.
However, for successful cultivation, the cuttings require high humidity and a temperature of at least 23 °C to 27 °C. The best times for taking cuttings are spring and summer. In order to achieve and maintain the ideal growing temperature, we recommend using an indoor greenhouse (€29.00 on Amazon).
The most important things in brief:
- Pruning in spring or autumn
- only use sharp and clean tools for pruning
- shorten old shoots by about two thirds
- If possible, do not prune young shoots, these are where Dipladenia blooms
- use suitable shoots as cuttings
- a late-pruned Dipladenia also flowers late
Tip
Cut your Dipladenia in spring, then you can immediately use suitable shoots as cuttings.
