The lushly blooming Dipladenia is a colorful eye-catcher not only on the sunny balcony or the wind-protected terrace. It can also be cultivated well as a houseplant. Then you should prefer a more compact growing variety.

How do you care for a Dipladenia as a houseplant?

A Dipladenia as a houseplant requires a warm, bright location without drafts, winter rest at 8-15°C, moderate watering in summer, less in winter and regular fertilization during the flowering period.

How do I care for Dipladenia indoors?

No matter whether you plant your Dipladenia indoors or outdoors, it always likes to be warm and bright. This applies to the original Mandevilla varieties as well as to the Sundaville varieties bred from them. A place on the warm windowsill is therefore appropriate, but the midday sun should not shine there unprotected for a long time.

If temperatures are below around 20°C, Mandevilla may not bloom, or at least less than expected. The bedroom is therefore a less suitable location. Do not water your Dipladenia too much, it only needs a little water, but should not be completely dry. She also doesn't like waterlogging. However, the Mandevilla needs fertilizer regularly during the flowering period.

Does the Dipladenia need special winter care?

Give your Dipladenia a winter rest otherwise it won't bloom next year. To do this, place the plant a little cooler, in a room with around 8 °C to 15 °C. Avoid adding fertilizer and water the plant a little less than in the summer months.

You may want to cut back your Dipladenia a little before moving to its winter quarters, but you can still do that in the spring. But don't cut too late, otherwise flower formation will be delayed.

The most important things in brief:

  • bright, warm location without drafts
  • keep it cooler in winter (hibernation)
  • water moderately in summer and little in winter
  • fertilize only during the flowering period, possibly start shortly before

Tip

With the Dipladenia you get a very attractive and long-flowering plant in your living room. However, it needs a period of winter rest in order to continue to bloom profusely.
