As a lushly flowering ground cover, cushion phlox generally requires little care in the garden. The prerequisite for this is the thoughtful selection of a suitable location for planting.
Where should cushion phlox be planted in the garden?
The ideal location for cushion phlox is sunny or partially shaded and offers enough space to create lush plant cushions. Typical locations include edge planting of terraces, wall tops, stepping stone path borders and rock gardens. The soil should be permeable and mineral.
This plant loves the sun
So that the cushion phlox can form lush plant cushions with numerous flowers, it should be planted in the spring (if necessary between spring and autumn) in a location in the garden that is as sunny as possible. Semi-sunny locations are also tolerated, but they usually result in somewhat weaker flowering of upholstery phlox during the flowering period. The plant cushions that spread out to the sides are particularly suitable for decorative greening in the following locations in the garden:
- as edge planting on terraces
- at the top of natural stone walls
- for edging stepping stone paths
- in the rock garden
This is what the soil for the upholstery phlox should be like
The ideal soil for cushion phlox does not have to be particularly nutrient-rich, but it does have to be permeable and mineral. To prevent waterlogging from forming in normal garden soil, you can work some sand or fine gravel into the soil before planting.
Tip
Since cushion phlox reproduces relatively quickly and vigorously under favorable conditions, planting it at a distance of around 20 to 30 cm is sufficient to quickly create a continuous carpet of plants.
