Poinsettias are native to regions where it doesn't freeze. They cannot tolerate frost at all and are therefore kept as houseplants all year round. In summer, however, they definitely appreciate a stay on the balcony. You just have to protect the plant from frost.
How does the poinsettia react to frost?
Poinsettias do not tolerate frost and should be kept at temperatures between 20 and 22 degrees. In winter they should be kept indoors and in summer they can go outside as long as the temperature does not fall below 5 degrees. Drafts and too much moisture should be avoided.
Poinsettias come from the tropics
The origin of the poinsettia is tropical deciduous forests in Mexico, Central and South America. It almost never freezes there. The decorative plant with its striking bracts therefore does not tolerate frost at all.
Never keep the poinsettia too cold
It's not just frost that bothers the poinsettia. Even temperatures below five degrees damage the plant. It tolerates warm temperatures all year round and can therefore stay in the room.
Temperatures between 20 and 22 degrees are ideal. Please note that the soil dries out more quickly at high temperatures and you will have to water the poinsettia a little more often.
If you want to make the poinsettia bloom again, you have to keep it darker for some time after the flowering period, water it little and fertilize it.
Don't keep the house too sunny
Even if the poinsettia copes well with higher temperatures, do not place it in a window that is too sunny. If necessary, shade the plant during midday to prevent the leaves from burning.
Winter poinsettia properly
You need to keep a poinsettia indoors for the winter. But since it shows its pretty leaves during the winter, it is grown indoors during this time anyway.
Poinsettias, on the other hand, have to be kept over the summer. In summer you are welcome to take the plant outside as long as the temperatures there do not fall below five degrees. Place it in a warm, bright place on the balcony or terrace that is not too drafty.
The poinsettia is only allowed outside when there is no longer any frost at night. Sometimes it's too cold to care for poinsettias outside, even in May.
Tip
In addition to too much moisture, drafts also cause problems for the poinsettia. Water sparingly and always place it so that it does not get any drafts.
