A tall oleander in the middle of flowering is a real feast for the eyes - hardly any other plant attracts the flower as much as this impressive, flower-strewn shrub. However, the oleander only develops its splendor when it feels comfortable. Above all, it needs a lot of sun and warmth.
Which location is best for oleander?
The ideal location for an oleander is a full sun and warm place in summer, protected from wind and rain. In winter it should be kept cool (max. 5 degrees Celsius) and rather dark. The plant also needs a lot of moisture, but not from above.
Oleander loves it warm and sunny
In summer you should place oleander in a sunny and warm location, because if there is a lack of light and cold, the plant will refuse to bloom. Above all, make sure that the pot is protected from wind and rain, and ideally it should have a protective house wall behind it - it is even better if the oleander is also placed under a eave or similar so that the sensitive flowers are not exposed to rain to get. The varieties with double flowers in particular are very sensitive to rain, as the delicate flowers can turn brown and even become infected with moisture-loving fungi.
Overwinter as coolly as possible – then the oleander can stay dark
The evergreen oleander only needs a little light in winter, provided you overwinter it as coolly as possible at a maximum of five degrees Celsius. The warmer the location in the cold season, the brighter it has to be there.
Oleander needs a lot of moisture - but not from above
Although oleander cannot tolerate rain, it still needs a lot of water. During the hot summer months, you can water the shrub once or twice a day. It also doesn't hurt it if the saucer is under the pot full of water and the plant has wet feet. Some Italian experts might now object that the free-growing oleanders in their homeland grow on bone-dry soil. Rest assured: it only seems that way to you. The plant prefers to grow in bodies of water where the groundwater level is comparatively low. The roots reach very deep, so that the oleander gets the water it needs directly from the ground.
Tip
In cold and rainy summers, the oleander flowers can fail - after all, the shrub only blooms when it is warm and sunny enough. In this case, it is best to place the plant in a sufficiently lit winter garden.
