Well-cared for palm trees develop a very extensive root system. It is so powerful that it is even capable of bursting the planter. Then at the latest it is high time to implement it. Sometimes the root ball has already become so large that it barely fits into the new pot. But can the roots be cut back safely?
Can you cut off the roots when repotting a palm tree?
When repotting the palm tree, he althy roots should not be shortened. Only rotten, mushy or brownish root parts as well as root spirals at the bottom of the container may be cut off to avoid root rot.
Don’t shorten he althy roots
Palm trees are very sensitive to damage to the root system. This is also the reason why so many indoor palms die from waterlogging and root rot. Therefore, he althy roots should not be shortened.
So that the root ball does not fall apart and the fine plant parts are damaged, it is recommended to water the palm tree well before repotting.
If the plant cannot be lifted out of the pot, the container may have to be dismantled. Please do not tear or tug on the trunk to get the palm tree out of the pot. As a result, the palm tree is often damaged and dies despite the best care and fresh substrate.
Rotten and dead root parts
These should definitely be removed, otherwise they can begin to rot in the moist soil and promote the dreaded root rot.
He althy roots are light and crisp. You can recognize damaged plant parts by the following criteria:
- The lifelines are brownish in color.
- They feel squishy and soft.
- The roots often give off a putrid smell.
First remove the old substrate surrounding the root network. The damaged parts (€21.00 on Amazon) are cut off with a very sharp knife. Clean the cutting tools thoroughly before this care measure so that no bacteria can penetrate the plant through the open cut surfaces.
Root spiral on the ground
Sometimes the roots at the bottom of the container form a spiral that is already growing out of the drain hole. You can also cut these off when repotting.
Tip
Palm trees are often sold in containers that are far too small for reasons of space. Therefore, repot new acquisitions into a larger pot as soon as possible. This means the Mediterranean ambassador can develop well as desired.
