The exotic-looking and often impressive arched hemp (Sansevieria) comes from the warm and dry regions of South Africa. However, the plant is not only widespread there, but can also be found on the Arabian Peninsula and in many parts of Asia. In our latitudes, the plant thrives primarily as a houseplant, but in southern Europe (especially in the Mediterranean region) it can also be planted in the garden.

Which location is suitable for bow hemp?

The ideal location for bow hemp (Sansevieria) is light to partially shaded, with warmth and high humidity. Avoid direct sun to prevent leaf burns. Colorful cultivated forms need sufficient brightness to develop their markings.

Bow hemp prefers sun, warmth and high humidity

Sansevierias do not necessarily need a location in full sun - on the contrary, as this can also result in severe leaf burns if not acclimatised - but it should be as light to partially shaded as possible. In particular, the cultivated forms with the “colorful” (i.e. marbled or variegated leaves) require light, as the markings only appear when there is sufficient brightness. Otherwise, the plant can also be grown in darker to shady corners without any problems - bowed hemp is not very picky in this regard. A lot of warmth and high humidity would also be an advantage, which is why a place on the windowsill in a bright, daylight bathroom is best suited.

Tip

In summer you can also put the bow hemp on the balcony or terrace. However, first get him used to the sun slowly!
