Sansevierias, also known by the common names 'mother-in-law's tongue', 'bow hemp' or 'bayonet plant', are among the most popular houseplants. These succulent plants can live for several decades and, depending on the species and variety, can grow up to 150 centimeters high. However, bow hemp grows very slowly, so such a stately, magnificent specimen takes many years to complete.
How big can bow hemp get and how do I influence the size?
Bow hemp can grow up to 150 centimeters high depending on the type and variety, although growth is slow and the size is limited by the pot. The height cannot be influenced by cutting measures, but proper care is crucial.
Size is limited solely by the pot
Many types of bow hemp reach heights of around 150 centimeters and have dense clumps, the size of which is limited solely by the circumference of the planter. The species Sansevieria trifasciata in particular is very fast-growing; its rhizomes can burst if the pot becomes too small. Other species, however, especially the 'Hahnii' varieties of Sansevieria trifasciata, remain rather small with a height of around 20 centimeters. It is not possible to limit the height through pruning measures as the leaves do not fully develop again. To do this, you would have to cut off the leaves directly above the ground - the plant will sprout again from the rhizome. Before taking such a step, however, remember that bow hemp grows very slowly and your cut specimen will therefore need many years to return to its old size.
Use cut leaves as cuttings
You can cut the leaves into pieces about 10 to 15 centimeters long and stick them into cactus soil as leaf cuttings. However, it can take a few months for new plants to grow from it.
The right care for strong growth
If you have the impression that your arched hemp is growing too slowly or even not at all, then check its growing conditions. The brighter the plant is, the faster growth will occur. Of course, the reverse also applies: Sansevieria grows even more slowly in darker locations. For he althy and strong growth, the plant also needs to be watered and fertilized regularly. Always water the plant when the substrate has dried to a depth of about one centimeter and fertilize about every four weeks during the growing season with a cactus fertilizer (€6.00 on Amazon).
Tip
You can tell how much sun a particular variety of bow hemp needs from the color of the leaves: the brighter and more colorful the leaves, the more light the sansevieria needs.
