The triplet flower - also called bougainvillea or miracle flower - is valued for its abundance of flowers. It enchants every terrace and every winter garden. However, care is not that easy. How to care for triplet flowers.
How do you properly care for a triplet flower?
To properly care for a triplet flower, you need sufficient watering, avoiding waterlogging, regular fertilization, occasional repotting and appropriate pruning. In winter it should be kept cool and watered sparingly over the winter. Also pay attention to diseases and pests.
How do you water triplet flowers correctly?
The pot ball must never dry out completely but must not become too wet either. The triplet flower does not tolerate waterlogging!
Do not water until the surface of the substrate is dry. Use soft water. Always pour off excess water straight away.
When do triplet flowers need to be fertilized?
From spring onwards, fertilization is carried out at one-month intervals. During the flowering period, fertilize a triplet every two weeks with a fertilizer for flowering plants.
If you grow a triplet flower as a bonsai, the plant will receive more fertilizer during the summer.
How to cut bougainvilleas?
Triplet flowers need pruning so that they branch vigorously and produce many new flowers.
In spring the shoots are shortened by half. Later, only light topiary cuts will be made.
Before you put the bougainvillea into winter quarters in autumn, you can also cut it back so that the plant has enough space. Feel free to light them up a bit.
When is repotting on the agenda?
Repotting is always done when the pot is well rooted. Given the plant's fast growth, this can happen every spring. It's time for a new pot when the roots start sticking out of the drain hole.
What diseases and pests occur?
Mildew is a common problem. This fungal disease appears as gray or white deposits on the leaves. The reason is too high bale moisture or stagnant air.
Scale insects are more common pests. If the infestation is mild, you can rub off the leaves. If the infestation is severe, use commercially available sprays.
How do you overwinter a triplet flower?
Drilling flowers should be kept cooler in winter at three to twelve degrees. If the plant is too warm in winter, it will bloom little or not at all.
Watere very sparingly. If the bougainvillea is overwintered in a location that is too dark, it will lose its leaves. This is a normal process.
Tip
Triplet flowers are very fast-growing. You therefore need a lot of space if you want to keep several specimens or propagate the plant yourself.
