Which Dendrobium species are suitable for the windowsill?

The most popular Dendrobium species for the windowsill are Dendrobium nobile, Dendrobium phalaenopsis and Dendrobium kingianum. They vary in flowering time, temperature requirements and flower shape, but are all easy to care for and bring magnificent pieces of jewelry into the home.

Dendrobium nobile

Thanks to its stems covered in flowers and leaves and its robust, undemanding nature, it is one of the most popular orchids for the windowsill. A Dendrobium nobile blooms in the middle of winter and grows in summer. Central care measures are:

  • From April to September a bright, warm location at 20 to 25 degrees Celsius
  • From October to March, bright and cool at 12 to 18 degrees Celsius
  • Water regularly in summer and little by little in winter

The Dendrobium nobile is not fertilized during the winter flowering period, but every 4 to 6 weeks from April to September. The grape orchid should be repotted at intervals of 2 to 3 years to preserve its vitality and flowering ability.

Dendrobium phalaenopsis

The natural hybrid of Dendrobium and Phalaenopsis produces flower stalks from the shoot tips on which the butterfly flowers gather in small groups. This Dendrobium species loves temperatures between 25 and 28 degrees in summer and does not want to be cooler than 20 degrees Celsius in winter. Dendrobium phalaenopsis impresses with its tireless flowering period and rarely takes a breather. If it doesn't bloom, a night-time temperature drop of 5 degrees Celsius will initiate flowering.

Dendrobium kingianum

We have one of the most beautiful hybrids to thank for this species, because the Dendrobium kingianum is a parent of the popular 'Berry Oda', also known as the bamboo orchid. From autumn to spring, seductively scented flowers emerge from its numerous pseudobulbs above lush green, lanceolate leaves. When it comes to care and location requirements, Dendrobium kingianum pulls together with nobile.

Tip

Do you love a challenge and have an orchid display case? Then the two species Dendrobium jenkinsii and Dendrobium primulinum are a good choice. The need for uniformly warm temperatures and a humidity of more than 80 percent cannot be met in normal indoor culture. In the shielded climate of the display case and terrarium, however, the two orchids show off their most beautiful side.
