Pond liners are available in numerous different designs. Individual variants are also “sanded” or “graveled”. You can read about what these films are used for and what they can be used for in our article.

What do you use sanded pond liner for?

Sanded pond liner is used to make ponds, streams and pond edges look more natural. It protects the actual pond liner from UV radiation and prevents pond water from being drawn out due to capillary action.

Sanded foils

As a rule, pond liners are only roughened on the surface, some liners are also more structured. Which side upwards pond liners are installed can vary in individual cases.

Some foils are also covered on the top with a layer of sand or a layer of very fine gravel. The carrier material is usually also coated with a fleece on the underside to make it more stable.

Sanded and gravelled films are generally not sufficiently dense to be used as the sole film in ponds. In any case, a “regular” pond liner must be placed under it.

Areas of application

There are different areas of application for sanded and gravelled films:

  • for bank design of ponds
  • in streams
  • as a means of cleverly concealing the capillary blockage

Landscape on the banks of the pond

Due to the need to build a capillary barrier, the pond liner must always be led out over the bank and placed in a small ditch next to it. This is necessary so that the pond water is not “pulled out” of the surrounding soil due to the capillary effect.

The black foil lying over the edge of the pond is of course not a particularly attractive sight. To hide this view, you can either lay embankment mats or a second, sanded or gravelled liner over the actual pond liner.

This also offers the additional advantage that the actual, very UV-sensitive pond liner receives important protection. Under the influence of UV light, UV film ages very quickly, then becomes brittle and brittle and breaks. The gravelled film on the top helps to keep the sun's UV radiation away from the pond liner and thus protects it against aging and brittleness.

Liners of streams

Streams in the garden can be sealed using various methods. As a rule, concrete is used here or stream lining is used, but film solutions for lining the stream are also possible.

Since the bottom of a stream is always visible through the clear water, an ordinary pond liner is usually very annoying. If sanded foil is used (or placed over it), the appearance of the stream is much more natural.

Hide capillary barrier

The film that is guided over the bank and into the pond ditch can usually only be partially hidden. If you place sanded pond liner over it, the look looks much more natural. If you don't necessarily want to plant plants on the edge of the pond, this is certainly the most visually beautiful solution.

Tip

You can also let the stone foil hang over the edge of the pond into the embankment. This gives the pond bank a particularly natural look.
