The easy-care coffee plant can be propagated quite easily, but you need a little time and patience. Only after a few years will your home-grown coffee plants bloom and bear fruit, the so-called coffee cherries.
How do I propagate a coffee plant?
To propagate a coffee plant, you can plant fresh seeds in potting soil or cut cuttings and let them grow roots in moist potting soil at a temperature of approx. 25 °C and high humidity.
Growing a coffee plant from seeds
The seeds of the coffee plant do not germinate for very long, so they must be sown fairly fresh. If you already have a coffee plant that is already bearing fruit, you can use its seeds after thorough cleaning. Otherwise, you will definitely find what you are looking for in well-stocked specialist retailers or from special consignors.
The seeds germinate more easily if they are soaked in warm water for a few hours. Then press the seeds into pots with potting soil without sprinkling any more soil on top. Place your growing pots in a warm place and always keep the soil moist, but not wet. Temperatures between 25 °C and 30 °C are ideal.
Propagation by cuttings
It is best to cut top cuttings from your coffee plant for propagation. You can also use appropriate clippings from the last pruning, if this has just been done. The cuttings should be about eight to ten centimeters long and have a few leaves.
It is best to place the cuttings individually in small pots with potting soil so that you do not have to separate the young plants with their sensitive roots again. In order for these roots to form, your cuttings need a uniform temperature of around 25°C and high humidity.
To ensure both, stretch a transparent film over the pots or place them in an indoor greenhouse (€29.00 at Amazon). Air the cuttings for a few minutes every day to prevent mold from forming or the cuttings from rotting. However, there should be no drafts.
