Environmental influences such as rain, snow and sunlight take a toll on the arbor over the years. It is therefore necessary to protect the house from weathering by painting it regularly. A popular option that we would like to discuss in more detail here is painting.

How do you paint a garden shed correctly?

To paint a garden house, you should thoroughly sand the wood, apply a primer that protects the house from mold and fungi, and apply two to three coats of varnish. Note windless days to avoid contamination of the paint.

The difference between varnish and glaze

Lasures form a transparent film, while varnishes cover the wood with a solid layer of color. For this reason, glazes contain significantly fewer dyes than varnishes, where the grain no longer shows through.

Painting wood correctly

So that the paint sticks for a long time and the wood is reliably protected, three work steps are necessary:

  • Sand the wood thoroughly and prime it.
  • Sand again, paint a second time.
  • Sand and paint again.

The tools you need

  • The best possible brushes (€12.00 on Amazon) and paint rollers ensure an even application.
  • Stirring rod to mix the paint.
  • Paint tray to wet and wipe rolls with paint.

The primer

First sand the wood, vacuum or brush the surface and only then apply the primer. This contains active ingredients that reliably protect the wood from mold and fungal attack. For wood that has a lot of resin, but which is not recommended for building a garden house, you should definitely use a covering primer.

Painting wood

You will achieve the best result if you apply several layers of varnish. First, paint all edges with a brush. Large areas are then painted with a roller in the direction of the grain.

Two-tone paintwork

At the moment, houses in Swedish red or Frisian blue with contrasting white window frames and doors are extremely popular. To ensure that this painting is successful without ugly paint tears, first prime the entire garden house.

  • Then paint the lighter color with a primer, intermediate and final coat.
  • Allow to dry completely and thoroughly.
  • Carefully mask the surface with painter's tape or special paint tape.
  • Paint the taped area in the base color. This seals the smallest gaps and prevents the paint from running out.
  • This is followed by two coats of varnish in the contrasting color.

Tip

So that blown-up dust or earth does not settle on the still-damp paint, you should definitely carry out this work on a windless day.
