You can let your creativity run wild when designing a sandbox. For the little ones, it doesn't necessarily have to be a classic square sandbox. If you build a sandpit yourself, you not only create a great playing opportunity, but also create an eye-catcher in the garden.
How can I make a sandbox attractive?
To design a sandbox creatively, choose different shapes such as square, round or slanted, use different border materials such as wood, stone or palisades and consider building two-part sandboxes for different age groups.
Many ways to design a sandbox
- Square, round or crooked shapes
- two-part sandboxes
- Palisade border
- Round wood border
- Stone border
- Boat-shaped sandbox
- Sandpit with cover
The location is crucial
The location plays an important role when designing a sandbox. In larger gardens you have more choice than in a small garden plot. If possible, look for a place that is not in full sun. If this is not possible, build a sandpit with a cover.
Various shapes
The classic shape of the sandpit is a square with a raised wooden border. If you are a little creative and want something special, choose other shapes. A sandpit can also be designed round. Slanted shapes are permitted, as are sandboxes that stimulate the child's imagination. In the shape of a ship or as part of a pirate complex, the sandpit is even more fun.
Sandbox border
The border of a sandpit doesn't always have to consist of wooden slats. Here too you can use completely different materials.
A border made of logs has a rustic effect. A palisade border is ideal for small pirates. To do this, small trunks are anchored vertically in the ground.
Stone borders are particularly easy to care for. However, the sandbox should be completely embedded in the ground so that the children do not trip and injure themselves on the stones.
Two-part sandboxes
If you have children of different ages, build a two-part sandbox. Then you can fill one part with some fine sand, which is suitable for smaller children.
Fill the other part with coarser play sand, which can be used to build great sandcastles.
Tip
The question of which sand is suitable for the sandbox cannot be answered easily. It is important that the sand is dimensionally stable, not sharp-edged and free of all kinds of pollutants. Building sand from the hardware store is the cheapest alternative.
