A planted wall not only looks beautiful, it also provides oxygen and cools you down on hot days. The good news: It doesn't have to be expensive or complicated to add greenery to a wall. Find out below what affordable options are available.
How can you design a planted wall cheaply?
To design a planted wall cheaply, you can use plant bags, plantable picture frames or climbing plants. Homemade models made from pallets are an option for outdoor use. Climbing plants such as ivy, zebra herb and porcelain flower are suitable for indoor use.
Make your own planted wall
A wall garden can be installed both outdoors and indoors. Models for indoor use are usually a little more expensive and more complex, as not a drop can go astray. (You can find more information about vertical walls indoors here.) On the other hand, you can also put self-made models on the wall outdoors, e.g. from pallets. If you are less skilled in craftsmanship or are looking for a quick solution, you will find several options on the internet, e.g.:
- Plant bags and planters for individual green wall design
- plantable picture frames for selective wall greening
- tailor-made systems for complete wall greening
The following are the models available for purchase, suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, and their prices.

Alternative: climbing plants
You can add greenery to your walls even more cheaply with climbing plants, although it takes a while for the wall to grow over. This variant is also suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, although you should avoid plants with adhesive roots indoors as they damage the wall. Instead, build a beautiful trellis and choose plants that will cling to this trellis without taking up the wall. This is also a good option for outdoor use. Probably the most popular indoor climbing plant is the ivy. Also popular, although somewhat slow in growth, are the zebra herb and the porcelain flower. You can find more beautiful climbing plants for the balcony and terrace.
