Even on the smallest balcony you can create a paradise for flowers, fruit and vegetables - which you can then enjoy harvesting directly from the bush and snacking on. With our six tips you can create even more space for the tastiest delights.
How to design and create a balcony garden?
To create a balcony garden, you should choose space-saving plant species, use vertical gardening, attach planters to walls and ceilings, plant columnar fruit trees, use mini raised beds and use creative planters such as fruit boxes or Euro pallets.
Create and design a balcony garden
A balcony only offers very limited space, so you have to use a lot of creativity when creating and designing your garden - and also make a wise choice when it comes to the fruits and vegetables you want to plant. Basically, the rule applies: Choose varieties that grow as compactly as possible, that don't take up too much space and are still very productive. In addition, some vegetables only provide a negligible yield in a limited space - and should therefore give way to other types. The best example is the potato, which some people grow on their balconies. But lush growing varieties such as physalis / Andean berries and zucchini also take up a lot of space, or root vegetables such as carrots and parsnips only produce low yields.
Vertical Gardening
Most balconies only have a small footprint and therefore do not offer much space. However, you can also use the walls to attach planters - and grow herbs there, for example.
Hanging tomatoes in hanging baskets
Just like the walls, the ceiling shouldn't be left unused: delicious hanging tomatoes and hanging strawberries thrive in hanging baskets.
Pillar fruit for carefree fruit enjoyment
If you like eating apples, pears, cherries or plums, you can rely on a columnar fruit tree that remains slim. Be careful, however: Some resourceful suppliers grow normal types of fruit in the form of columns and then call this “pillar fruit” - the awakening will then be unpleasant, as these varieties naturally grow strongly. It is better to use actual columnar fruit varieties whose growth has been selected in this special way for centuries.
Mini raised bed for convenient gardening
If you have back problems, you can garden comfortably in a mini raised bed or table bed, which can be conveniently positioned on the balcony and leaves plenty of space for fresh vegetables.
Crates and boxes instead of conventional planters
Gardening is also excellent in bakery and fruit crates stacked on top of each other, especially since this way you ensure the necessary water drainage. Stack two boxes on top of each other, but only the top one will be planted. The lower one, on the other hand, serves as a collecting basin for excess irrigation water.
Herbs from the Europallet
With the help of a Euro pallet, you can easily garden vertically: simply place the pallet vertically and use boards from the tabs to build flower boxes. These can be wonderfully planted with flowers and herbs.
Tip
Salad lovers should prefer cut and picked lettuces, as they always grow back and can be harvested continuously.
